Teaching | Curriculum

• Create challenging, project based lessons aligned with ELA, Math & International Baccalaureate curriculum for 6 grades, 470 students, 22 classes each week.
• Write/Design BPCS K-5 Visual Arts Curriculum which stresses observation drawing, integration, art production, principles of design, muscle memory development (fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, etc.), curiosity, communication, empathy, and global awareness — along with thoughtful self analysis and reflection.
• Every grade explores various mediums (drawing, painting, collage, ceramics, printmaking, etc.) plus modeling clay in K, weaving in 2nd, stop motion animation in 4th, knitting in 5th.
• Students investigate/decode the work of contemporary artists (Amy Sherald, Kerry James Marshall, Martin Puryear, etc), keep sketchbooks to track their learning & development of projects, explore mediums & ideas, apply personal insights & opinions to their artwork.

Leader

• Specials Team Lead: coordinate & advocate for Specials Team (7 teachers – PE, Science, Spanish & Performing Arts) who support the entire school. Provide organized meetings with goals, students’ needs information & schedules, school wide communication & initiatives, clear emails, plus follow up reminders & updates (using Google chat & text).
• Anytime Anywhere: school-wide fantasy travel program. A colleague & I created this unique program for all students to provide equity, curiosity & understanding of others. Each grade investigates geography, habitat, culture, language, sports, etc. of specific destination. In Art, students create projects which are then installed to create journey’s end.
• Last year’s trip to Trinidad featured fish by kinders, birds by 1st, coral by 4th, airport by 5th, etc. Collectively, students read a million minutes to fuel for the trip/earn tickets, pack their suitcases, jump onto our elevator and travel. After a day of adventures in country, students reflect on their travel experiences and apply insights to their lives.
• BPCS Creative Director: initiate school-wide awareness events (Dot Day, K Weather Station, World Water Day, Black History & other heritage months, Anytime Anywhere, etc.) as well as create school graphics.
• Exhibiting students’ Art in public is critical to completing art/communication cycle. Provide gallery installations, digital displays, create books celebrating students’ accomplishments, etc.
• Art Advisory Board, meet weekly with small group of 5th graders to identify leadership opportunities for students, cull ideas for art projects and school-wide events, develop students communication and advocacy skills.

Creative Director  BBB increases the number of 100+ book homes for kids 0-18 in NYC by providing access to & ownership of books, community, and passion for learning through free events & literacy-based community programming.

HUMAN LIBRARY NYC Brooklyn, NY 2019 – present

Creative Director | Librarian Started in Denmark in 2000, HL has chapters world-wide. Real people are “Books” on loan to “Readers”, giving the opportunity to listen to stories first-hand. HL public events break down social barriers by providing a safe platform for individuals to challenge the stereotypes & prejudices that they may have.
